Last Saturday the largest number of Bracknell under 17's , 15's  and 13's for many  years travelled up to the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford , Kent  to compete in this years  South Of England Championships. Judging by the numbers of athletes competining on both days we were one of the club's  with largest number of entries over the 2 days.

Abi Watson kicked of the day for throwers in the  girls under 15 Shot. Abi who in her first season in athletics and 1st year in the age group, already has the qualifying standard for the National Championships at the end of the month. After making the cut saved her best till last finishing the competition with  a throw of 10.32 just a few centimetre's  off her pb , which earned her a 5th place finish. With the nerves now gone after her shot, went one better in her Discus adding a metre to her pb throwing 24.40.

James Gardner one our many 1st year under 15 boys in the group, kicked off his 2 days of competition in the hammer a event he has been training for ,for only a few months. Before today Jame's has added 12  metre's to his pb. James was nt stopping today, after putting all his warm up throws into the net which would of unsettled the most experienced throws . Not James 4 of his competition  throws were further than his old pb and evently finished the day with 31.58 nearly a metre and half further than he has previously thrown.  James was back early on day 2 for his Shot James already picking up Gold at  county championships with 10.45 early on in the season. We both new if he could transfer how he has been throwing in training ,into this comp. he would be in with a great chance of a big pb.   James went into the comp. his usual  competitive self , competing in the shot like it was a training session, after the 1st round was in Silver medal postion , it was clear to see in his next  5 throws James was going to chase the leader down  and make the gap between himself and the 3rd place athlete larger. Which he convincely did. Round after round James improved his pb and ended the competition adding 89 centimetre's to his previous best to finish with 11.34 and a Silver medal. James finished off the weekend with a solid performance in the Discus throwing 27.34 metre's.

Charlie Ashdown Taylor who in a few weeks time competes for Berkshire, in the Men's Under 17 Ocathlon in the English Schools Combined Championships at Bedford along with team mate Harry Henson.
Charlie's first event was the Shot, Charlie was his usual competitive self, saved his lonest throw till the end and ended the competition narrowly missing out on a pb throwing 12.43 metre. Having no time to recover moved straight onto the High Jump which is another one of the many events that Charlie compete's  in at a very high standard  and another one of the events he will compete in , in few weeks time.  Charlie  ended the competition with another solid 1.70 metre performance.

Yasmin Grosvenor who was one of many of our under 13's that competed over the 2 days. Picked up the Gold medal in Shot winning the competition be over 11/2 metre's .
I feel it only fair to congradulate and mention our other medalists:

  • Isabel Deacon Silver in U17 Women Pole Vault
  • Amelia Quirk Gold in U17 Women 1500 metre
  • Joshua Zeller Silver in U15 Boys 80 metre Hurdles
  • Kyle Milton Bronze in U15 Boys 200 metre

As well as all the athletes that competed over the weekend many going through a call room before competing first time .
There were  many pb's over the weekend by our athletes. Julian and I felt like we were at a club league match with so many athletes competing in Bracknell  colour's . Well done to all of you . With the way the club is developing I feel this will continue in  the future.
